Joomla AllVideosReloaded: Movies don’t display in Internet Explorer

Problem: I have a Joomla website that uses AllVideosReloaded (AVR) to display YouTube Videos. Works fine in all browsers except Internet Explorer. In Internet Explorer, you can’t see the videos.

Solution: I use the Joomla plugin JCH_Optimize to speed up the loading of the website. Unfortunately, the compression of the AVR javascripts prevents the video from displaying in Internet Explorer. This is the fault of Internet Explorer. To fix the problem, I configured JCH_Optimize to NOT compress the following AVR scripts:

  • silverlight.js
  • wmvplayer.js
  • swfobject.js
  • avreloaded.js

Review: Accordian FAQ Plugin for Joomla

On a recent Joomla conversion job, I needed an FAQ extension that had the accordion effect; for example, you can see all the FAQs on a page but not the answers. To see the answer, you click on the FAQ question and the answer opens below it. Click on another question and the previous FAQ closes and the current one opens. After looking at several FAQ extensions in the Joomla Extensions directory, I chose Accordion FAQ by JoomlaNook. Continue reading

How to Remove “Home” from Joomla Home URL

Joomla has an great feature with an annoying BAD habit: it’s called the URL Alias.  The URL Alias allows you to enter a search engine friendly URL of your choice for a menu link. For example, for your About Us page, you can enter The best widgets on the planet in the menu Alias field and your URL for the About Us page will look like this:
http://bestwidgets.com/the-best-widgets-on-the-planet.

No doubt, this is a great feature, but the developers left out an important setting: No Alias for the Home / Default link; for example, if you click on the Home link on your Joomla site, your URL looks like this: http://bestwidgets.com/home. However, it should look like this: http://bestwidgets.com. Period.

Joomla 1.6: Is it Time to Upgrage

Joomla 1.6: To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade: That is the QuestionJoomla 1.6 was released in the dead of winter and now it’s almost summer. Is it time to upgrade to Joomla 1.6? Not quite, unless you are willing to use Joomla without some MAJOR Joomla extensions. As of 06-01-2011, the following Joomla extensions have no stable release for Joomla 1.6. You can decide for yourself if you can live without these extensions. I know I can’t:

  • JCE Content Editor (Component)
  • JCal Pro Calender (Component)
  • Glossary (Component)
  • AiContact Safe ((Component))
  • X-Map (Component)
  • AllVideos Reloaded (Component/Plugin)
  • Extended Menu (Module)
  • DocMan (Component)
  • Mobile Joomla (Component)
  • Filtered News (Module)
  • Smart Bookmarker
  • Sobi
  • Virtuemart

Give Joomla Front End Editing Access to a Specific Article.

By default, the Joomla User Group Author has editing access only to articles in which they are the Author. As a result, it is very simple to restrict front end article editing to specific articles by assigning a Joomla Author user to the article.

For example, say you have a user who needs to have editing access to a specific article, but you don’t want that person to be able to edit any other articles.

Joomla Commercial Templates: Review Joomlashack

Joomla is a great CMS, but finding a Joomla template you like can be a daunting task. One solution is to have WriteNowDesign build a custom Joomla template for you; that way you get exactly what you want.

However, if you are looking for a low-cost solution, try using a commercial Joomla template from Joomlashack. We have used Joomlashack templates for several clients and have found them to be well built, reliable, and attractive. What’s more, they are very flexible in terms of layout: Joomlashack templates have many module positions that allow you to easily create a very complex page layout or a very simple layout by simply turning modules on or off. Plus, most Joomlashack templates come with several color schemes that you can easily change.
