As a web designer, I constantly use an FTP tool. An FTP (File Transfer Protocal) tool allows me to transfer files to a web or ftp server. Every web designer needs and uses an FTP tool.

But lately, I have found that my clients often need an ftp tool too. For example, I often work for clients from different states, and it’s pretty common that they want to send me a whole bunch of image or large files. Because I usually need to get the files immediately, sending them on a CD in the mail is too slow. And, it can be tedious or impossible trying to attach hundreds of files to emails, especially if some of the files are over the size limit for the client’s mail server.

This is a perfect situation to use FTP. I can create a folder for the client on the web server and then they can log in and upload the files onto the web server. Once the files are on the web server, I can download them.

There are several FTP tools you can buy, but several years ago I found a perfect FTP tool that is FREE: FileZilla ( http://filezilla-project.org/ ). This wonderful FTP tool does everything you need from an FTP tool, and it’s free. And now it’s available for both Windows AND Mac.
