Siteground Hosting Review: Stay Away

I rarely do hosting reviews unless the host is bad. This is my Siteground Hosting Review: Stay Away.

On the surface, Siteground hosting looks good. And they are for most things except one: their FTP service is extremely slow and inconsistent. For example, sometime when I upload a file, it takes a few seconds, as it should. But more often, it takes 30-60 seconds to upload a file. And I’m talking about small files; eg, 656 bytes.

I called them to complain and got the run around and they said there were no problems. But I’ve worked on about 8 sites on Siteground and FTP is always an issue. It is important to note that I NEVER have this slow FTP problem with wp-engine, Bluehost, Hostgator, DreamHost.

Review RSForm!Pro for Joomla

RSFormPro Form Build for Joomla

For years I’ve heard about RSForm!Pro. Everyone said it was great and easy to use. But I kept using Chronoforms, the free form tool for Joomla. Chronoforms is pretty great, but it is not easy for my clients to use. Also, when you use Chronoforms Wizard to create forms with 50 or 100 fields, it becomes almost impossible to work with.

When a client asked me to build a form with over 60 fields, I decided to buy a copy of RSForm!Pro to build the form. It was very easy it was to build a large form. What’s more, I think it would be pretty easy for my clients to build complex forms too.

What Make RSForm!Pro Good

  • Every type of field is easy to add
  • Easy Captcha
  • Drag and Drop fields to change order. This worked flawlessly.
  • Easy to use Date Picker.
  • Responsive form template.

If you are building forms on Joomla, I highly recommend RSForm!Pro. At $25, it’s a good deal. Available for Joomla 1.5, 2.5, and 3.0.

Joomla 3.0 on MAMP: How to Fix Magic Quotes Problem

Use PHP 5.4.4 on MAMP

I just finished installing Joomla 3.0.3 in MAMP. Initially, I couldn’t get past the environment check: Joomla 3.0 requires PHP 5.3 or higher and PHP must have Magic Quotes GPC Off. Without the correct PHP version and PHP settings, you cannot proceed with the installation.

Note: If you plan to transfer the Joomla 3.0 MAMP site to a web host, you will need the ability to modify your hosting environment to specify PHP 5.3 or higher and the ability to turn off Magic Quotes GPC. If your host does not allow this, then you won’t be able to use Joomla 3.0. [Read more…]

How to Quickly Duplicate a Joomla Template

How to Duplicate a Joomla Template

Starting in Joomla 2.5, there is a function that makes is easy to copy or duplicate a template. For example, say you want to use the default Beez5 template, but you need to modify it. Use Sucuri to Remove Malware from Joomla or WordPress Site

Use Sucuri to Clean Blacklisted Joomla or WordPress Site

Last month I fixed two Joomla websites that had been hacked with malicious content injections. Malicious content injection means the hackers insert javascripts, links, and redirects in your content that take users to known spam or hacker sites, and often you can’t see anything on the site or in the site files.

Both hacked sites were displaying Google’s Malicious Content warning. Needless to say, the Google Malicious Content warning will kill your website traffic and possibly get your site completely blocked and blacklisted.

If you get the Google malicious content warning on your site, you can use Sucuri’s free website scanner to determine if your site has actually been hacked. If the scan reveals that your site is compromised or blacklisted, I recommend buying a Sucuri website monitoring package that fits your need. [Read more…]
