Joomla 1.6 / 1.7: Is it Time to Upgrade?
Is it time to upgrade to Joomla 1.6 / 1.7? That’s the question I keep asking myself and the question my clients ask me. The answer is probably.
Not the answer you want to hear, but the following information should help you decide.
- First and foremost: Are all of the Joomla extensions that you absolutely need available for Joomla 1.6 / Joomla 1.7? I have compiled a list of the most common and important Joomla extensions and indicated if they are available for 1.6. In some cases where the extension is NOT available, I have supplied an alternative extension that does the same thing.
- If you have a Joomla 1.0.x site, then I’d say it’s time to upgrade. You will probably get improved speed, SEO, and administrator usability by upgrading.
- If you have a Joomla 1.5 website, your site will be fine for several years. The main reason to upgrade is if need any of the new features in Joomla. See joomla.org for a complete list of Joomla 1.6 / 1.7 features.
- If you have a 1.5 site and are redesigning the template, now is definitely the time to upgrade to 1.7.

Note: I have used version 1.6 to indicate that an extension has been upgraded to work with Joomla 1.6 or higher. In general, if an extension has been upgraded to work with Joomla 1.6, it will work with 1.7 and higher versions of Joomla. However, to be safe, you should check the Joomla extensions directory to see if the extension is listed for 1.7.
