Worst Web Host I’ve Encountered

I normally don’t write negative reviews, but I just spent the last several days wrestling with the worst web site host I have encountered in my 14 years of website development. Peak to Peak Internet (www.peakpeak.com), located in beautiful Boulder Colorado. They win the prize for worst everything. If you’re not convinced, below is a list of complaints:

  • No Control Panel. Any web host without a control panel is worthless. I’m talking about the basic cpanel software found on all standard website hosting packages
  • Unusable FTP. I had to upload files to the clients web server and it took over an hour to upload 300 files, with a failure rate of about 20%. That means I had to re-submit those files again, and again, and again. Each time I submitted the failed batch, I would get another batch of failed uploads. I called them and they looked into it, but determined it must be my ISP’s fault. I FTP files to many different web servers all day every day of the week, but this is the first time I’ve had such a problem and they detemine it’s my fault.
  • Missing-In-Action Support. Because there is no cpanel on this host, I had to submit a support ticket to create a new database. With a standard cpanel, I can do this in about a minute. After four hours I had not even received an email response to indicate that they received my request. So I called them and they told me that the guy who has the ability to create a new database wouldn’t be in until 4pm.  It’s now 6:49pm and I’m still waiting for a database I requested at 9am.

If you are looking for a web site host, DO NOT USE PEAK TO PEAK INTERNET.

On the other hand, I can highly recommend the following hosts:

  • For good value and good service: Hostgator.com
  • For AWESOME service but kind of expensive: Liquid Web
  • For GREAT value…. Forget about great value. Web Hosts that offer GREAT value are not worth the trouble.
  • For TERRIBLE service and TERRIBLE value, Peak to Peak
