To Create a Joomla Article Table of Contents (Joomla Article Index)
If you have Joomla articles that are long, you might want to spit them into smaller pages. With Joomla, you can easily do this and automatically add a table of contents (TOC) so the user can navigate to different parts of the article quickly. Usually, you would want to split the articles at headings, but you can split them anywhere you want.
To create a Table of Contents (Article Index) for a Joomla Article
- From the Joomla Article Manager, open the article to which you want to add a TOC.
- In the editor screen, place your cursor where you want to create the first split and click the Insert / Edit Page Break icon
in the JCE editor or click the Pagebreak button at the bottom of the editor screen if you don't have JCE editor installed.
Joomla displays the Insert/Edit Pagebreak dialog box.
Joomla Insert / Edit Page Break Screen - Enter a page title in the Page Title field. This will be used in the title at the top of the Page.
- (Optional) Enter an alias in the Table of Content Alias field. The text in this field will be used as the title at the top of the browser and as the title of the TOC entry. If you don't enter anything in this field, the title field will be used instead.
- Click Insert.
Joomla inserts the pagebreak. The pagebreak is indicated by a gray bar with a pagebreak icon in the center.
Joomla Pagebreak Indicator in Article Editor - Repeat steps 2-5 for each pagebreak / TOC entry.
- Save your article and test the changes. The TOC will appear, by default, at the top, right side of the article.

Note: You can modify the CSS rules for the TOC entries and the TOC position and format them however you want.
