How To Remove the Joomla Home Alias

July 1, 2011 by Pat Fortino

Joomla forces you to enter a URL alias for each menu link. If you leave the menu Alias field empty, Joomla automatically creates one based on the menu title. Normally, this is acceptable. But with your Home link, it’s better to have NO alias.

Here’s how to remove it.

  1. Access your Joomla database with phpMyAdmin or any tool that allows you to edit the database.
  2. Open the table called jos_menu.
  3. Click Edit for the Home link and delete the text in the alias field and then click the Go button to save your changes.
The URL for your home link will now show only the base URL; for example, http://mysite.com.
