Joomla Upgrade: 1.5 to 2.5, 1.0 to 1.5

November 16, 2011 by Pat Fortino

Upgrade Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 2.5

Again, Joomla.org provides excellent instructions and Migrator software for this upgrade:

http://docs.joomla.org/Migrating_from_Joomla_1.5_to_Joomla_1.6

Below are steps describing the process:

  1. Read all the instructions in the Joomla Migration document.
  2. From the Joomla 1.5 administration screen, install jUpgrade in the Joomla 1.5 site. There is a link to it in the Joomla 1.5 to 2.5 migration doc.
  3. Enable the Mootools Upgrade plugin. If it’s not already installed, you can download it from the Joomla Extensions directory.
  4. Run the jUgrade extension. Once you successfully run it, it will download and install the lastest version of Joomla in a sub directory and migrate the 1.5 Joomla content to it.

Once jUpgrade is finished, check the new site to make sure you content migrated successfully. The Joomla migration document provides detailed instructions on how to move the 2.5 site to your live site once you are finished.

Could you detail this a little more maybe? “Because the 2.5 upgrade will change most of your URLs, you will have to create 301 redirects in the .htaccess file. If you fail to do this, all of your pages that are listed in Google will be broken links. Eventually, Google will update these URLs, but your page rank could drop if you don’t create the redirects BEFORE your new site goes live.”

I know this article is two years old, but I’m trying to fix the site I just began redesigning! Thanks!

I have found that most urls are fine, but if they are in sections in 1.5, then you will have an addition layer in your link because jupgrade replaces sections with categories; eg, /section/category becomes /category/category. Most of the time this won’t create problems, but it makes urls longer.

And yes, you will probably have to write redirects for all urls.
